Coaching Services
Let's face it: being an emerging adult is just complicated. You face numerous stressors, coupled with adults constantly advising on what you should do. Unfortunately, many lack what research indicates they need: an adult who can guide them in discovering their true desires and help formulate a strategy to achieve those goals. As a certified young adult life coach, I assist young individuals in overcoming stress while fostering self-confidence, self-reliance, and awareness of their strengths and values.
How does teen/young adult coaching work?
In weekly, 30 or 45 minute coach sessions, we assess different aspects of their lives, identify areas of satisfaction, and pinpoint where improvements can be made. Together, we envision their ideal future and establish small goals to help them progress toward that vision. We also explore unique strengths and values, transforming challenges into tools for success. I help young adults evaluate the elements of their life. Where are they content? Where could things be better?
What results can I expect?
Young Adults express newfound confidence in achieving their goals, while Parents often notice quick improvements in their teenager’s communication, motivation, and happiness.
Do I need a youth life coach or a therapist?
Coaches and therapists both aim to enhance well-being, but the right choice depends on the individual's current needs and goals. Keep in mind, the same client may work with a therapist and a coach to address different needs and goals - if the client's clinical issue is well-managed. The therapist may work with the client to address the clinical issue, such as depression, while the coach works with the client around goals that matter to ongoing progress, such as finding clarity around job or career direction or improving academic performance. Here’s an overview of the primary differences:
Therapy
-
The patient is struggling with dysfunction related to psychological issues, concerns, or symptoms that interfere with daily tasks.
-
The patient needs help coping, alleviating pain, or distress related to trauma, disorders, or illness.
-
The patient wants to work through the problems and get back to normalcy
-
The patient is looking for a mental health professional to help them overcome and live well again.
Coaching
-
The client is functional and does fine with daily tasks.
-
The client is considered psychologically normal and copes well enough.
-
The client wants to be better, grow, or set and achieve higher goals.
-
The client wants to improve performance, relationships, or life satisfaction.
-
The client is looking for a success partner to help facilitate the next level of growth, advancement, or change.
I offer two different coaching approaches:
Organic coaching, where clients and I start from scratch, discovering where they’re content in life and where they’d like things to be different. Once we have clarity on the areas in which they’d like to create change, we figure out what’s blocking them from achieving those goals. From there, we explore who they are–their values, strengths, personality, etc–and use that information to build a personalized road map for getting through the blocks and reaching their vision of success.
Focus Coaching, which are a series of sessions targeting issues that adolescents frequently struggle with. These include:
-
Academic Success: After clarifying the student’s academic goals and why those goals are personally meaningful, we do a deep dive on what’s working, what’s not working, and why. Drawing from the student’s own strengths and resources, we use evidence-based strategies to create, implement and finesse a customized plan for success.
-
Anxiety Reduction: Research shows that adolescent anxiety rates are higher than they’ve ever been. We explore the teen’s own thoughts and perceptions, evaluating them for current validity, then use proven tools for calming and soothing anxiety.
-
Social Connections: Developmentally, adolescents are wired for focus on and connection with peers. When friendships are rocky and connecting is difficult, it can be a crushing experience. This package starts with clarifying what the client’s personal social nirvana would be. We move on to exploring what they want and need in relationships, how they’re currently operating, what’s working, and what isn’t. Drawing from various resources, we create and execute a plan for finding social contentment.
-
Self Exploration: For the client who wants to understand who they are, what they want, what their purpose is, what their passion is, their gifts, their weaknesses, and much more, we’ll use assessments and organic coaching tools to build a sturdy toolbox of self-understanding and internal and external resources.
-
Ideal College & Career: Many young adults feel they’re at a crossroads without a map. Parents and teachers often have great ideas and great intentions, but sometimes they don’t match up with what the teen themself feels called to do. We determine what’s most important for the client as they explore college and career options.
